Blue Recycle and Green Compost Carts Delivered This Week

Curbside Services Begin Week of May 18

By now, many of you have noticed the delivery of the new green compost and blue recycle carts to your homes.  This marks a significant change to Chestermere’s waste program.  Starting May 18th, the much anticipated curbside recycling and composting programs begin.

Delivery of the carts began on Sunday, May 10, a day earlier than originally planned, however, the carts have been met with an overwhelming positive response.  97% of the residents who have received their carts on Sunday, are happy the new green and blue curbside program is starting next week.  Donna McCallum, Operations Manager with Chestermere Utilities Incorporated (CUI), was on hand for the first day of cart deliveries, “I am so impressed with my fellow Chestermearian’s.  The feedback from our residents and neighbors has been so positive, and as we expected with any new services, there are a lot of questions people have”.

With the beginning of these new curbside programs, CUI has brought on new contractors to handle the collection services.  With that, we have had to change the waste collection days for some Chestermere homes, as we are moving from a four day schedule to a five day waste collection schedule.  Of special, and obvious note, upcoming changes for the garbage is that black and green bags are on the way out and clear is on the way in.  With all these changes happening, CUI is encouraging residents to review the materials that are being delivered with their carts and to visit the CUI website (cuinc.ca) for more information.

“Implementing these curbside programs really puts Chestermere on the map as a leader,” says McCallum, “this allows us to not only catch up to what our fellow municipalities are offering residents, but it takes us all one step ahead of the pack.”

CUI has found that this proactive waste management initiative will be unique to the area.  Although Calgary has launched a green cart pilot project, Chestermere will be the only community to have both blue and green carts simultaneously in use for its residents.  CUI thanks its residents for their enthusiasm and commitment to these new programs coming to their curbsides next week.
