On Friday December 11th, CFS Team Lead: Captain Craig Passmore, CFS Co-Lead: Firefighter Jake Gallinger and other members of Chestermere Fire Service hosted a day of training.
The participants in the training were Correctional Peace Officers from Calgary Corrections as part of Solicitor General and Alberta Justice. Correctional Peace Officers were representatives of the fire extraction teams sent from Calgary Correctional Centre, Calgary Remand Centre and Calgary Young Offenders Centre.
These facilities, just as other buildings and homes, can experience fires and in those instances it is extremely important to have the staff that work there, even though they are not firefighters, trained in some basic fire training to enable to have the skills and tools to deal with the fire until Calgary Fire Department gets there to scale a full attack on the blaze.
“Chestermere Fire Services is proud to assist Calgary Corrections in the development of their Correctional Peace Officers in their firefighting skills. As firm believers in collaboration, this was an excellent opportunity to form a partnership with Calgary Corrections and expand their capabilities and understanding of firefighting operations”, said Captain Passmore.
CFS began the day with a tour of the fire hall and then the training began. Everything from air bottle training, to equipment, to a race to getting into their gear the quickest…with the losers getting to run the tower stairs – full gear. CFS did a great job and kept it fun at the same time.
Captain Passmore continued saying, “Together our goal is to ensure that these staff members are prepared and equipped to safely mitigate any incidents that arise within their facilities, and continue to keep Albertans safe”.
