Garbage in Garbage Out

I agree with all the comments about garbage privacy. Apparently CUI negotiated a bad deal with Calgary and now we have to clearly expose our garbage sins (coming in the New Year).

My point in writing is the inefficiency of the new collection process. Yes, I know CUI has told us this new recycling regime is not going to increase user costs. I don’t believe them.

Here’s why. The old collection process required one person and one truck. Now, I see that old truck to collect our one allowed bag. Already about 50% less efficient.

Next the blue bin truck comes with a driver and a bin mover. As each bin is loaded, the bin mover signals driver to lift the bin and stuff falls on the street or doesn’t make it in the hopper. Bin mover worker picks it up and manually deposits it. About twice as long per home.

Not done yet. Now the green bin truck with driver and bin man comes around. Same issues. Takes twice as long and stuff falls out and gets picked up.

It now takes 3 passes, 5 workers, 3 trucks and about 6 times the time and effort per home as the old process.

I haven’t mentioned yet the bin police. The went around and tagged badly placed bins, etc. Not sure how many people.

Finally, conditions are ideal right now for picking up the stuff that fall on the street. What happens in the winter? Cost for cleanup in Spring?

In summary, it takes at least 5 times the time, effort and expense to collect the same garbage. Who will pay for that? We will.

But, we will feel better because we are recycling!
