Open letter to our community:

I must say that when our school opened its doors, 54 years ago, to serve the students of the communities of Langdon, Indus, Conrich and their surrounding areas; that no one could have predicted the growth that would ensue. Most would make the assumption that with growth that you would lose that sense of community or small town feel, but the events over the past few weeks have proven this to be false.
On June 9th tragedy struck our school community with the car accident that resulted in the loss of one of our students, Jaydon Sommerfeld. What could have been an event that saw our school fall to pieces actually proved to be the catalyst in displaying the resolve, of not only the 800 people who are in our school on a daily basis, but our school community as a whole. We pride ourselves in being a very diverse and accepting school community, and even so, we were still amazed by the outpouring of support that our students, staff and community has shown to one another, and for this we will be eternally grateful.
I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to so many that have been so supportive. I am thankful for the first responders who did an amazing job in an extremely difficult situation at the scene of the accident. I would like to say how fortunate we were to have the support of Chris Pawluk and his crisis response team from Rocky View Schools and the support of our Senior Admin and Rocky View Schools Education Center Personnel in navigating this very difficult time. It has gone unsaid how supportive Alberta Education and the Assessment Branch have been in helping us to meet the needs of our students at this time, so to them I am grateful. We have had so much support from our colleagues in our neighbouring schools and throughout the jurisdiction, to whom I want to give our thanks. Lastly, but definitely not least, to our community as a whole, who have come together not only to support the Sommerfeld family, but also to support our students as they have been thrown into grief, many for the first time. Your support through words and deeds has helped to reaffirm the strength of our community and the premise, that it takes a community to raise a child.
On behalf of the students and staff at Chestermere High I would like to convey my sincerest thanks for all of the support we have received.
Sincerely,
Jordan Fenton
