When Akesh Aheer came up with the idea to host an Open Mic night, he had no idea the response it would get. The collective effort of Akesh, his aunt Parveen Aheer-German, mom Leela and Dad Malkeet, put their heads together and organized an event that was hoped to welcome in the community – and boy was it ever! On Thursday October 22nd, the Waiting Room Café in Kinniburg was jam packed full of musicians and music lovers coming together to enjoy a night of talent and community.
Aheer Studio of Performance has been a long standing music studio here in Chestermere offering both instrument and vocal lessons. Founded by the very talented Leela Aheer, the reigns have now been handed over to her eldest son, Akesh as his mom is a pretty busy lady now representing as the Chestermere Rockyview MLA.
The call went out for musicians and singers of all ages to perform at this first ever open mic night and what a response it got. Musicians of all ages, gender, and race came out to share their talent with the extremely large crowd that came out to the event.
Seeing the remarkable turnout this event received, speaks to the lack of entertainment Chestermere has to offer. The same thing was noticed with the comedy shows that have been hosted at The Point. Tickets selling at lightning speed because the residents of Chestermere are screaming for things to do.
Performances ranged in genre and style as there was everything from professional recording artists, to youngsters that were just beginning to those that simply have only performed for themselves in the comfort of their own home. But one thing is for sure, the talent was overflowing – so much so that there is a follow up even already in the works. Stay tuned!
