Proud of the new recycling program

I’ve seen a few letters to the editor regarding how “complicated” the new recycling and composting program is. And I have to say, I have the complete opposite opinion. I think the information they provided and the roll-out has been incredibly user-friendly and easy to understand.

I’ve told everyone I know how proud I am of the program and of our city for implementing it in such a wonderfully uncomplicated way. In one letter it was mentioned that the City had negotiated a bad deal with Calgary – but that isn’t my understanding at all. My understanding is that Calgary changed its rules and will start to charge the City for organic waste and recyclables coming into the landfill. So if we did not change our program, we would absolutely see a huge soar in our costs. So regardless of whether it might cost more to have 3 different trucks come by and collect our waste (which we’ve been told we won’t), our costs would go up if we didn’t!

And the issue with the tiny bin to collect food waste on your counter – I put mine under the sink with my garbage can – you can put it wherever you want. If you’re anything like my family, it will fill up within a couple days with food waste/used paper waste and you’ll need to move it to the bin anyway. So no smell issues. No more than a normal garbage can anyway.

Personally, I think this new program is fantastic and the way the City has implemented it is outstanding. I’m very proud of my city.
