Local artist Sasa Boric is hosting a paint day for kids fundraising event for Ice Edge Skating Club Sept. 24.
“It’s a really fun activity for kids,” said Boric whose daughter skates with the club.
With the increasing popularity of adult paint nights at pubs, Boric and club President Donnette Bren thought this would be a fun idea for kids.
“Without the wine,” laughed Boric.
Instead kids will have juice and cookies to snack on while they paint.
Participants in the event are split into different sessions by age. With each group painting something different.
Last time this fundraiser was held March, kids aged four to seven painted an animal theme, eight to 12 painted self-portraits, and over 13 painted using missed medium.
This time Boric said the paintings will be a little different as she expects many of the children will be returning for the event.
Kids spend about an hour and a half completing an acrylic painting that they get to take home at the end of the session said Boric.
She is hoping to see new faces from the community as well.
“Kids…they are happy to come and paint,” said Boric, “and parents are happy to have them paint in somebody else’s house.”
Boric has been teaching art for almost 20 years, with the last 15 in Chestermere. She said she likes to find ways to give back to the community.
Since her strengths are art and painting, it was a logical fit to do a painting fundraiser.
“Painting is something that is dear to my heart,” she said.
She felt this fundraiser would be a good way to raise funds for the skating club and for the kids to have fun.
“They get to take an art piece home and they have a feeling of accomplishment,” said Boric, “it’s a bit different then going door to door selling.”
Ice Edge Skating Club is skate Canada certified and offers recreational classes as well as ringette and hockey skating lessons and figure skating.
“It’s important for children to be involved in physical activity,” said Bren.
She feels that children have the opportunity to learn life skills as they are coached in an activity like skating.
“But they also learn how to express themselves, they can be creative with skating,” said Bren.
