They say that you can appreciate something more if you’ve experienced it – and since not all of us can up and buy a farm, “Open Farm Days” gives Albertans an opportunity to check out actual working farms in Alberta.

Alberta Open Farm Days is a collaborative, province-wide, two-day event that will be held August 20th – 21st and will give Albertans an opportunity to experience the farm and understand where their food comes from. It is a backstage pass to meet the farmer, experience Ag-tourism in Alberta and taste local foods direct from the producer.

“Open Farm Days is the perfect opportunity for Albertans to enjoy a staycation in the country, enjoying the beauty and bounty of rural Alberta. From farm tours for the family and farm-fresh feasts at one-of-kind culinary events for the foodie in all of us, there is something for everyone. With more than 100 host sites across Alberta, now is the time to start planning your Open Farm Days rural road trip”, says Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

Open Farm Days has taken place in Canada for over a decade, starting in the Maritimes and moving West. 2016 will mark the fourth annual Alberta Open Farm Days.

Luree Williamson, CEO, Agriculture for Life explained, “Agriculture plays a vital role in the well-being of our rural communities and our province. Ag for Life is proud to join the Government of Alberta in support of Open Farm Days as a way to create awareness and appreciation of agriculture as an important contributor to our economy and our Alberta way of life.”

Friday July 29th was the launch of the Open Farm Days where invited guests got a sneak peek at what will happen on this two day event later this month.
On Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21, top Alberta chefs using locally grown products will be featured at unique culinary experiences being held across the province. There is a range of costs to participate in the culinary events.

On Sunday August 21st, farmers and ranchers will welcome visitors at more than 90 host farms throughout Alberta. A wide array of activities will be offered from hayrides and petting zoos to on-farm demonstrations and opportunities to buy locally grown and made products. Admission to farms is free, but there may be costs for some activities.

“Alberta has a well-earned reputation for quality, thanks to the hard work and commitment to excellence of the more than 89,000 people who work in the agriculture and agri-food industry. Open Farm Days is a great opportunity for Albertans to show their support for Alberta producers, while learning more about how their food is grown and why our province’s agriculture businesses are thriving”, adds Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.
