Regional Transit strategy being explored in area

The Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) is exploring the possibility of expanding the On-It regional public transit program to the region East of Calgary.
“I think there is support for it,” said Ettore Iannacito, Regional Transportation Program Manager with the Calgary Regional Partnership.
The current two-year pilot project is connecting communities South of Calgary.
“We’ve got two years in order to build it up and ensure that it’s successful,” he said.
Commuters can catch a bus to travel between Calgary, Okotoks, Turner Valley, Black Diamond and High River during peak commuter hours.
“We’re offering different mobility options within the region,” said Iannacito.
The CRP is conducting a feasibility study in Strathmore and Chestermere.
If the study results are positive, they will transition the South program to the area.
“It’s great because we’re not starting from scratch,” he said, “we have our templates, we know what to do, we know what works.”
Right now the CRP is not looking to bring the program to an rural locations or smaller centres in Rocky View County.
“Residents of Rockyview could come to a Chestermere park and ride lot and use the service,” said Iannacito.
If no unforeseen challenges occur, Iannacito said that they could have a plan in place in under a year with a pilot project of On-It transit coming to the area shortly after that once all of the involved stakeholders approve it.
