AHS issues advisory as air quality fluctuates in the province

Smoke from B.C. wildfires blowing over the mountains into Alberta

As smoke from the wildfires burning in B.C. blows into Alberta, the provincial government and Alberta Health Services (AHS) are warning Albertan’s of the potential for fluctuating air quality.
The province is recommending that both Albertan’s and visitors to the province take precautions against potential health risks and to be aware of air quality conditions in their area.
While slightly smoky conditions do not normally cause any health risks in healthy individuals, high levels of smoke can cause temporary irritation of the eyes and throat as well as shortness of breath.
Those suffering from respiratory conditions (including asthma and COPD) or who have existing cardiovascular conditions (such as angina, a previous heart attack or congestive heart failure), may have their symptoms worsen as air quality decreases.
AHS recommends that anyone with these conditions monitor their symptoms and follow their doctors instructions.
Regardless of one’s heath, if smoke can be tasted and/or smelt in the air AHS advises people to; monitor your symptoms, minimize physical activity outdoors, remain indoors with windows, doors and air circulation fans/vents closed.
If driving, keep windows and vents closed. Use the re-circulate mode on the fan to avoid drawing in outdoor air.
People experiencing symptoms related to air quality can call Health Link 24 hours a day at 811.
With air quality varying based on wind and weather conditions, the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
For information on the air quality go to the Alberta Environment Air Quality website at www.airquality.alberta.ca for air-quality readings from across Alberta that are updated hourly.
