Province introduces new Status of Women Grant program funds

New funding to increase equality in Alberta

Alberta’s NDP government announced that they have tripled the Status of Women grant program up to $1.5 million.
The grants are in place to support community projects boosting women’s safety, leadership, and economic security.
Originally the grant program was only budgeted for $500,000 however with careful budgeting, the ministry has been able to triple the program in fiscal year 2016-17 to more than $1.5 million.
“We tripled the funds because there’s a deep desire to tackle women’s inequality in all corners of this province.
“Every dollar of our Status of Women grant goes to improve the lives of women and girls in Alberta,” said Minister of Status of Women Stephanie McLean, “We know when Alberta women succeed, our economy grows and our communities flourish.”
The grant program offers grants ranging from $3,000 to $100,000 for either new or existing programs that will improve the lives of women and girls in Alberta.
Some of the kinds of programs that the province is encouraging include; empowering more girls to participate in sports, leadership training, support for women working in the technology sector, skills training for both immigrant and indigenous women, increasing the engagement of women in politics and supports for women looking to enter the agricultural sector.
