Calgary police arrested a Chestermere man with a loaded handgun in a restaurant in Calgary on Jan. 14.
Twenty-eight-year old Tommy Tran Nguyen has been charged with carrying a firearm in a careless manner, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of restricted/prohibited firearm with ammunition, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
The arrest was made by the Calgary Police Service’s (CPS) Gang Suppression team who were conducting a routine patrol shortly after midnight at a restaurant located on the 2400 block of 4 Street S.W.
“Officers asked to speak to a man at a table with a group of individuals.
“When the man stood up and moved away from the table, officers observed a handgun on the seat where the man had been sitting,” said CPS in a press release.
The weapon was determined by police to be loaded.
The gun was later found to be a loaded Browning 1911 .22-caliber handgun that had been reported stolen from Golden, B.C.
CPS’s Gang Suppression Team (GST) is a uniformed unit intended to disrupt and discourage gang violence and organized crime activities amongst both known and emerging criminals.
One of the roles of the GST is to ensure public safety through the enforcement of the Gaming and Liquor Act through patrols at licenses establishments, such as the one that lead to the arrest, to mitigate the potential for violence around licensed establishments.
Last year, the unit conducted 2,349 walkthroughs. These patrols led to 162 people being ejected from the premises.
