Chestermere Man convicted of impaired driving

One year driving prohibition given for bizarre summer crash

Citing the need to deter impaired driving in the community, a Strathmore judged sentenced Malkeet Aheer to a one year driving prohibition on Jan. 23.
Aheer was also given a $3000 fine and $900 victim fine surcharge.
Aheer was convicted of two counts, Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operation of a Motor Vehicle over 80 mgs that stemmed from a July 12 collision on Cove Road.
In his ruling, Provincial Court Judge L.R. Grieve called the entire incident from the driving pattern prior to the collision through to Aheer’s arrest by RCMP as bizarre.
In his review of the facts of the case, Grieve described the July 12 collision, that saw Aheer drive through a fence and yard on Cove Road, then drive around the block to return to the scene of the collision as not something a clear thinking person would do.
He also commented on the good fortune that no one was injured in the collision.
Aheer was sentenced on the Operation of a Motor Vehicle over 80 mgs conviction and received a judicial stay for the Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle conviction.
Prior to sentencing, Aheer was given the opportunity to address the court.
Aheer expressed regret for the harm and terror he caused saying he was, “beyond sorry.”
In the course of the court proceedings, Aheer admitted to being an alcoholic. In his remarks to the court, Aheer stated that since the collision he has undergone treatment and continues to see both a phycologist and councilor.
He stated that he has not had a drink since the collision.
The judge took Aheer’s remorse and treatment into consideration when delivering his sentence saying that the fact he went to seek treatment on his own rather than on instruction by the courts was, “much more impressive to me as a judge.”
