Crash between semi-trailer and car leaves one person dead

Serious collision closes intersection north east of city for several hours

One person is dead and a second is in serious condition after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 840 and Highway 564 Jan. 2.

Strathmore RCMP and Wheatland County emergency crews were called to the collision between a semi-trailer and a car at about 6 p.m.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead on scene by EMS while the female passenger of the car was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured in the collision.

“Preliminary investigation suggests the car was travelling westbound on Highway 564 when it failed to stop at the stop sign,” said RCMP Media relations’ Cpl. Chris Warren in a press release.

“It subsequently struck the trailer of the semi travelling northbound through the intersection,” he said.

Police shut down the intersection for several hours and advised motorists to take alternate routes to avoid the area as they investigated the collision.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene to assist Strathmore RCMP with the investigation.

Police have stated that they will not be releasing the names of the victims.

Strathmore RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

Witnesses or anyone with information on the collision are asked to contact Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3535. Those wishing to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.tipsubmit.com, or by text, check www.crimestoppers.ab.ca for instructions.
