Drivers reminded to take care in school zones

With kids back in school, Chestermerians are being reminded to be vigilant and obey the rules of the road when driving near schools in the city.

Speeding and illegal U-turns are the most common driving infractions RCMP Const. Jeff Kalan has since in school zones since classes resumed earlier this month.

“To do a U-Turn in our city has to be done safely in an intersection and can’t just be done in between intersections in the school zone the way that they’re being done right now,” said Kalan.

Slowing down and making safe decisions helps to protect kids who are often not as aware of their surroundings as adults.

“One of the things a lot of motorists have to remember is that the kids…often aren’t thinking,” said Kalan, “They’re a little excited, they might see one of their friends across the street and often dart out into traffic not thinking and maybe not being safe.”

In Chestermere, school zones are active from school zones are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
