With changes to the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) rules coming into effect this spring the province has prepared online resources to help employers prepare for the change.

“Every worker has the right to a safe, healthy workplace,” said Alberta’s Minister of Labour, Christina Gray, “These new laws bring Alberta into the 21st century and align with the protections other Canadian workers already have.”

“Our government is providing employers with information and support so they can successfully implement these much-needed changes,” said Gray.

The primary changes coming into effect on June 1 are new worker’s rights: The right to know potential hazards, the right to refuse dangerous work and the right to participate in their health and safety.

Other changes are also designed to protect workers in Alberta from harassment and violence in the workplace with new protective measures.

The June implementation of the new rules concludes work to update Alberta’s OHS rules that started with the passing of the law last year.

This past spring, the province worked to consult with employers, workers’ advocates and Albertans on the specific rules concerning harassment and violence in the workplace.

The consultation process was completed April 9 and pass as an Order in Council on April 23.

With the legislative changes completed, OHS is rolling out and education campaign to ensure that Alberta employers are prepared on June 1.
