The Chestermere Rec Centre officially opened new spaces in the facility which will offer a wide variety of purposes to groups in the community and surrounding area.

“What we were finding is we have a lot of different community groups that were coming, and they wanted meeting spaces, or spaces to do their recreational activities, said Chestermere Rec Centre General Manager Jody Nouwen.

“We were running out of space, so we didn’t have anything to offer them,” Nouwen said.

The Chestermere Rec Centre knew that the facility needed multi-functional spaces that had more than just tables and chairs for meetings.

Nouwen and the Chestermere Rec Centre board of directors decided to work with Twirl Dance, which was a partner that was renting space in the facility. However, Twirl Dance was looking for something different.

“We were able to get an idea of what they needed, so we were able to help out their needs as well as create a multipurpose space for every other user in the community,” Nouwen said.

Figure skating, kick boxing groups, Spartan Hockey, Chestermere Minor Hockey, Indus Ringette, home work groups, and businesses who are looking for a space to host team building workshops have already used the new space at the Chestermere Rec Centre.

The space was undeveloped for ten years, and took over two years to complete, however now every group in the community and surrounding area can use the studios, or training facility to its fullest potential.

“Renting out more useable space for the public is exactly what we were looking for,” Nouwen said.

She added, before the Chestermere Rec Centre only had enough space for five groups to train or practice in the evenings, now the facility has space for double.

Since the Chestermere Rec Centre is the largest recreational facility in the area, it is dubbed as a hub for the community, Nouwen said.

“People want to come here, they want to be here,” Nouwen added, “When you don’t have the space its really disappointing, because you want to make sure that everybody is included.”

The ultimate goal for increasing the space at the Chestermere Rec Centre was to provide a large meeting area for people to come, recreate, and enjoy themselves, Nouwen said.

She added, the goal has already been met, new groups have begun to rent out spaces in the facility that the Chestermere Rec Centre has never attracted before.

The new facility space at the Chestermere Rec Centre wouldn’t have been possible without the financial help and support from the Chestermere Rec Centre board of directors, the city of Chestermere, Rocky View County, and the government of Alberta.

“It feels really good, I’m super excited to see it finalized,” Nouwen added, “It feels really good to say it’s open, and we’re ready to go.”
