New workplace legislation in effect for new year

Changes to provincial regulations passed last year come into effect Jan. 1

New employment standards came into effect in Alberta with the new year Jan. 1.
The new regulations come as part of the Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act and changes to the Employment Standards Regulation.
“Albertans deserve fair and family-friendly workplaces that support a strong economy and ensure they can take care of their loved ones,” said Alberta’s Minister of Labour Christina Gray.
Changes include; expanded compassionate care, maternity and parental leave, eligibility for leaves after 90 days rather than one year, simplified general holiday pay and standards for vacations and vacation pay, and new standards for termination and termination pay.
In an effort to help both employers and employees understand the new rules, the government has prepared several products explaining the changes.
Some of the materials included, online resources, instruction videos and webinars.
Anyone with questions can contact the provincial Employment Standards Contact Centre at toll-free at 1-877-427-3731.
