Province investing in sustainable futures for municipalities

New program to help communities complete green projects

Alberta’s NDP government announced they are investing in municipalities embarking on sustainable community projects in the province.
The government will be using $54 million from the Climate Leadership Plan to invest in the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).
The MCCAC will fund multi-year community development programs that will include energy-efficiency upgrades for buildings.
“From solar panels on schools to energy-efficient hockey arenas, this grant invests carbon levy revenues into programs that will empower municipal leaders and their organizations to make life better for Albertans,” said Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister responsible for the Climate Change Office Shannon Phillips.
Through the MCCAC the province will provide funds as well as technical assistance and education to municipalities working on projects to help address climate change.
“Our government is proud to continue supporting municipalities as we work together to advance clean technology, create jobs, save money and reduce emissions,” said Phillips.
The new investment on funds from the carbon levy will build on current programs offered by the MCCAC’s current programs that include the installation of solar panels as well as energy efficiency retrofit projects, climate change resilience workshops and energy-efficiency audits.
The goal of the grant is to ensure that municipalities are able to make the building’s their residents rely on more energy-efficient and sustainable.
