Staying safe on slippery roads in the winter

With a distinct chill already in the air it’s a reminder that winter, and winter driving conditions will soon be here.

With that in mind, RCMP Const. Jeff Kalan wants to remind residents to drive to conditions as the slippery conditions start to arrive on city roads.

“Obviously, the roads get more slick and to drive to the conditions,” he said.

In particular Kalan reminds drivers that black ice can occur, especially around intersections in the city.

“It doesn’t take much for a vehicle to lose traction and slide right through that intersection as your trying to make a turn or even come to a stop at a red light,” said Kalan.

“Just drive to conditions, black ice happens in this part of the world and the next thing you know you can run into the back of a vehicle without even realizing that there was ice on the road,” he said.

He said that as conditions change, if people notice icy or dangerous intersections they can call it in to the city’s roads department.

“When we see it we just call the city and citizens can if they notice a patch of ice that’s really bad to just call,” he said.

Another safety concern that Kalan watches for are cars with windows that haven’t had the ice and snow brushed off.

“That is actually a requirement of the law out here in Alberta,” he said.

He said that he does write tickets for that since it is a safety concern when a driver can’t see clearly.
