Chestermere RCMP and Peace Officers catch driver doing 70 km/h above the limit

Chestermere, Alta. – On March 26, 2019 Chestermere RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 1 headed towards Chestermere.

The vehicle (containing multiple occupants) was spotted by a Chestermere Peace Officer and was travelling at 151 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

A traffic stop was initiated where the driver was observed switching seats with a passenger. Upon contact with the driver symptoms of possible impairment were detected.

Chestermere RCMP attended to conduct an impaired driving investigation where the driver refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result, a 36 year old man from the Gleichen area was arrested and later released to appear in Strathmore Provincial court to face charges of Refusal to Provide a Breath Sample, Operating while Suspended, and multiple Traffic Safety Act infractions.

“This investigation highlights the ongoing dedicated efforts of Chestermere RCMP and Municipal Enforcement to maintain and preserve road safety within our community. A focus on impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving remains a priority in the delivery of our traffic safety plan” says Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz. “Chestermere RCMP would like to thank the public for the initial report in this matter and encourage continued reporting of dangerous or possible impaired drivers in our community.”
