Thieves attempt to steal CRCA ATM

Front entrance and ATM damaged in failed robbery

Chestermere RCMP responded to the attempted theft of an ATM from the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) on Jan. 3.

The complaint came into Chestermere RCMP just before 4 a.m.

“Chestermere members responded to find that the doors had been pried at the main entrance of the rec centre and an obvious attempt had been made to try and steal the ATM out of the building,” said Chestermere RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz.

He said that police believe that a vehicle was used in the attempt with thieves attaching straps to the ATM located inside the building in an attempt to pull the ATM out.

“The attempt ultimately failed,” said Wielgosz, “while the ATM was damaged significantly the attempt failed as the suspects weren’t able to get away with any of the money out of the ATM.”

The attempted ATM theft at the CRCA comes amid a string of ATM thefts in the region.

“There have been a number of attempted and completed ATM thefts have occurred in the area throughout Calgary, Airdrie, Strathmore and the region itself,” said Wielgosz.

“A group of individualsĀ have been targeting ATM machines in businesses, banks, and public facilitiesĀ for theft,” he said.

The attempts have generally all followed the same patter.

“Typically, these individuals will break into a business, sports arena, community hall, or bank where an ATM is clearly visible or close to a doorway.

“Chains or straps are tied between the ATM and a waiting vehicle outside which is used to pull the unit out of the building,” said Wielgosz, “Significant damage is usually caused as a result.”

While police continue to investigate the thefts, Wielgosz said that Chestermere RCMP are advising business with ATM’s remain vigilant and take steps to secure their ATMs.

“Any steps you can take to deter criminals from trying to even attempt a theft at your business would be advisable,” he said.

Police are recommending that business install ATMs away from doors and windows, suggesting rather that ATMs be located deep within a building.

They also recommend that ATMs be firmly secured in place and that high-quality locks installed on doors.

Wielgosz also recommends that business owners advise their alarm companies which alarm zone an ATM is located within and ask that police be notified immediately if that alarm is triggered.

Finally, he reminds business owners to report any suspicious activity to police.
