Using caution during cold snap

EMS tips on how to stay safe during cold advisory

Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services (EMS) want to remind Albertans to bundle up during the cold snap that the province is experiencing.

“Cover up as much skin as possible,” said EMS Public Education Officer Naomi Nania.

She added, the best way to quickly bundle up is by dressing in layers, and putting toques, gloves, and scarves on before going outside for any amount of time.

“It’s a good idea to set a time limit for being outdoors, especially for our vulnerable population, like the elderly, and children,” Nania said.

The elderly and children may not necessarily recognize the symptoms of frostbite, she added.

There are three degrees to frostbite, the first being frostnip which is redness, numbness, and a tingly feeling to the limb.

Frostnip can be easily rectified by going inside and trying to warm up either by having something warm to drink or sitting by a fire, heater or under a blanket.

While frostnip can easily be rectified, the third degree of frostbite can potentially be limb threatening.

Warning signs of third-degree frostbite include white waxy looking skin, and the skin being hard to touch.

“With that the tissue freezes,” Nania said.

Nania added, while dressing appropriately for the weather is important to ensure safety, staying hydrated can also regulate body temperature and combat hypothermia.

Again, with hypothermia there are three different degrees from mild to severe.

“With mild you notice blue lips, shivering, and goosebumps,” Nania said.

She added, the symptoms of life-threatening severe hypothermia include speaking inappropriately, stumbling around, and unconsciousness.

Over the past week EMS has been tracking cold related calls in Calgary.

“There have been four to five calls, none have been transferred to hospital,” Nania said.

She added, “There are people who work outside, and it’s important that they are taking breaks, whether it be in a warm vehicle, or inside a home.

“Try to stay indoors when you don’t have to go outdoors when there is a cold advisory.”
