Chestermere Whitecappers Quilters Celebrate 10 Years of Giving Rotary Club Steps Up To Help

Whitecappers Quilters

2022 marks the 10th anniversary of a labour of love by the Chestermere Whitecappers Quilting Group. Many new mothers, women in an abusive or violent relationship, families with sick children, needy seniors and others who need a helping hand,  have received a warm handmade quilt, toque, scarf, sweater or other comfort items thanks to the efforts of the Quilters. Current membership consists of five dynamic ladies, Gail Christensen, Carol Gardner, Susie Pelletier, Bonna Wagler, and Lorraine Webster with support from others in the Whitecapper community.

In a typical year, 40-50 quilts are handcrafted and donated. Recipients include the Chestermere Community Services New Mother Program, the Sherriff King Home for women facing domestic violence, Salvation Army Agape, Ronald McDonald House, the Childrens Hospital and seniors care homes.  This year, two world class knitters and fellow Whitecappers Kashmir Busi and Sandra Lord have contributed hand knit sweaters, toques, scarves, slippers, and mittens for the Sherriff King Home. Every item is unique and every item bears a message that somebody cares.

The Quilters rely on donations of material and money to purchase batting and other supplies. The Quilters would like to thank the Rotary Club Of Chestermere who have stepped up and committed to a generous donation on a biannual basis to ensure the Quilters have the necessary supplies to keep spreading a little warmth

and joy to people in need. This partnership between the Quilters and Rotary exemplifies Rotary’s motto – “Service Above Self”. To learn more about Rotary International and the Chestermere Chapter email rotarychestermere@gmail.com or visit their website at  www.rotarychestermere.org.

The Quilters welcome new members and donations of materials. If you are interested in joining or donating please drop in every Thursday at 9:30 AM at the Chestermere Whitecappers 50+ centre, email chestermerewhitecappers@shaw.ca, or phone 403-235-2117 and leave a message. The Chestermere Whitecappers are the oldest service club in Chestermere, now in their 39th year supporting the 50+

community in Chestermere and surrounding areas with a wide variety of educational, fitness, social and charitable programs.
