Multiple community projects underway for Chestermere

City administration is reviewing dog parks, park improvements, and pilot programs.

Chestermere City Council accepted a community projects presentation as information during the June 14 Regular Meeting of Council.

Dog parks, John Peake Park dock improvements and fire pits, Sunset Park dock improvements, trees, pilot project fire pits, and the pilot project for alcohol in the parks is among the projects the city is working to implement.

There are three proposed AltaLink dog park runs. All would have available parking, however, two would be accessible to all dogs that comply with the city’s existing off-leash bylaws, while the third run would be accessible to dogs under 25lbs, that comply with off-leash bylaws.

City administration is currently reviewing the scope of work, including chain link fences and other options, how many sites, the sizes of the sizes, gates, and other amenities.

Administration will work with the city’s communication team to ensure the public is aware of the new dog park areas.

City administration is also reviewing dock improvement in parks and recommending that the same dock system be used at all park beaches, to ensure consistency.
Diving, drinking, mooring, and motorized boat launching would not be permitted on the docks.

The city proposed two dock systems at Sunset Park with ramps for accessibility to the water.

The city will begin a pilot fire pit program where two fire pits will be installed at John Peake Park, out of the way of irrigation, Christmas light displays, and festival layouts, but still be displayed as a waterfront feature, the council report said.

One fire pit will also be installed at Sunset Park, with future locations to be determined after based on feedback from stakeholders.

The fire pit pilot would follow existing bylaws, including park times and fire bans.

The user would be asked to bring their own wood, clean-up would be included in community operations and general park duties, and community safety will be monitored as part of general duties.

Along with the fire pit pilot, the city is also piloting alcohol consumption in John Peake Park and Sunset Park.

Signage will be placed in the parks at the beginning stages of the pilot.

“The city has the option to start small and increase areas over time. Since this is a pilot, just like the fire pits, it can end any time council wanted,” Interim City Director of Community Services, City of Chestermere Cameron Wong said.
