The City of Chestermere is inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and take part in a series of community-focused environmental initiatives as part of this year’s Earth Day activities on April 22.
Framed around the global Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” the City’s campaign encourages individuals, families, and local organizations to take simple but meaningful steps to reduce environmental impact and enhance the community’s shared spaces.
At the heart of the initiative are community clean-ups, which will begin on Earth Day and continue throughout the spring. Residents are encouraged to organize or join neighbourhood efforts to remove litter from parks, pathways, and public areas, contributing to a cleaner and more visually appealing city.
To support these efforts, the City is providing free cleanup supplies, including gloves, garbage bags, and litter pickers. Supplies can be requested through an online form and picked up at City Hall, with municipal staff assisting in coordinating waste collection once clean-ups are completed.
The program is designed to be flexible, allowing participants to organize clean-ups at times that suit their schedules. While April 22 serves as the official launch, residents can take part at any point during the spring season.
In addition to hands-on cleanup efforts, the City is also promoting energy conservation through a symbolic action. Exterior lights at municipal buildings will be turned off on Earth Day as a gesture to reduce energy use and raise awareness about conservation. Residents are encouraged to take part by switching off non-essential exterior lighting at their homes for the evening.
Local officials say these initiatives are intended to highlight how small, individual actions can collectively contribute to broader environmental goals. Encouraging responsible waste disposal is another key focus, with residents reminded that the City’s Eco Centre remains available at no cost for proper disposal of household waste and recyclable materials.
Earth Day, first celebrated in 1970, has grown into a global event recognized in more than 190 countries, promoting environmental protection and sustainability. In communities like Chestermere, local participation plays a significant role in translating global awareness into tangible action.
The City’s approach this year emphasizes accessibility and community involvement. By removing barriers such as supply costs and offering logistical support, officials hope to increase participation and foster a sense of shared responsibility for the environment.
Residents are also encouraged to adopt everyday habits that reduce litter and environmental impact, such as properly disposing of waste, minimizing single-use items, and being mindful of outdoor spaces. While large-scale initiatives often draw attention, municipal leaders note that consistent, small actions taken by individuals can have a lasting cumulative effect.
As Chestermere continues to grow, maintaining clean public spaces and promoting environmental stewardship remain ongoing priorities. Community clean-ups and Earth Day initiatives provide an opportunity for residents to contribute directly to those efforts while strengthening neighbourhood connections.
With spring underway and more people spending time outdoors, the timing of the campaign aligns with increased use of parks, pathways, and recreational areas. City officials say they hope the initiative will not only improve the appearance of these spaces but also encourage long-term habits that benefit the environment year-round.
Residents interested in participating can request supplies through the City’s website and coordinate clean-up efforts in their neighbourhoods or favourite outdoor locations.
