Five Homes Damaged in Major Conrich Fire

Two under-construction houses destroyed; three others sustain exterior damage, no injuries reported

A significant structure fire tore through the Cambridge neighbourhood in Conrich on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15, reducing two unoccupied homes to charred ruins and damaging three others under construction, according to Rocky View County officials.
Fire crews from Rocky View County Fire Services, Chestermere Fire Services, and the Calgary Fire Department responded to the blaze after a 911 call just after 2:28 p.m., working for several hours to contain the rapidly spreading flames.
The fire broke out in a home under construction near Range Road 285 and Cambridge Boulevard, with flames quickly engulfing the structure and threatening nearby buildings. Video and photos shared online showed thick plumes of smoke rising above Conrich, visible from neighbouring Calgary communities.
Emergency crews focused on preventing the blaze from spreading to additional homes and infrastructure in the area. Roads in the vicinity were closed to all but emergency traffic while the fire was active but were later reopened once crews declared the situation under control.
By approximately 3:55 p.m., Rocky View County Fire Services reported the blaze was largely contained, though crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots and assess residual risks.
Two of the homes under construction were extensively damaged, essentially gutted by the fire, while three others sustained damage to their exterior structures. All residents in the immediate area were safely evacuated early in the response, and no injuries have been reported.
“It was a well-coordinated response across multiple agencies,” a Rocky View County spokesperson said in an update. Emergency services praised the swift actions of all crews involved in keeping the fire from causing even greater destruction.
Following the active firefight, crews remained on site into the evening and the next day to monitor smouldering remains and support recovery efforts. The scene of the destroyed homes remains secured as fire investigators continue their work.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Rocky View County Fire Services is conducting a technical fire investigation, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is assisting and will lead any inquiry should evidence point to potential criminal activity.
As authorities comb through the wreckage and interview witnesses, neighbours and property owners are being reminded to stay clear of the fenced investigation area and allow officials to complete their work safely.
The community has responded with support for affected homeowners and gratitude for firefighters. Many residents took to social media to thank first responders for their efforts in protecting lives and limiting damage to the growing Conrich neighbourhood.
This incident marks one of the most serious residential fires in the Conrich area in recent years, highlighting the importance of mutual aid arrangements between neighbouring fire departments that ensured rapid response and additional resources.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information or footage from the scene on Jan. 15 to contact Rocky View County Fire Services or the RCMP to aid in determining the fire’s origin.
Residents have since been allowed to return to their homes, though the physical and emotional recovery for those affected will continue in the days ahead.
