Two Hit Wonders – A StageWest Review

You’re likely familiar with the term “One Hit Wonders”. You know, those famous songs that were the single hit for some group that seemed poised to take off. Only to then disappear into the night with only the legacy of a single well known hit left behind them.
Well “Two Hit Wonders”, the latest presentation at Stage West, is all centered on the next level of groups who managed to repeat their earlier success with a second success. Or in the case of some of the hits, the song itself became a hit by two or more different artists at two different times.
Taking us on a tour starting back in the 60’s the ensemble cast belted out many very familiar tunes and even some less remembered tunes, all complete with outfits and accessories to remind us of the times.
From the clean cut part of the 60’s right through to the groovy era of that time frame with accompanying afros, bandana’s and tie died shirts. From there we zipped through to the 70’s the disco age replete with platform shoes and even the 80’s with skinny ties and a short segue out to the beginning of popular rap music.
While the songs brought back many memories, only a few of the 10 strong cast stood out. Not that there were any weak performers, but only a few brought the level up to make their performances more memorable.
Due to this, the real standouts of the performance were both the costumes and the choreography. The bang on look of the disco era and the quirky costumes for both the rap segment and the novelty wonders brought laughter and smiles throughout the crowd. To help understand the novelty segment, just think back to Gitarzan and The Streak to understand, perhaps that alone will make you smile, but the outfits helped even more!
As for the choreography, the non-performing members of the cast were entirely complementary as they kept step to the music, accompanied the lead singer(s) in many arrangements or moved through appropriate movements for the era they represented.
As this was opening night there were a few minor missteps, but they were barely noticeable and it will only get better as the show continues. Overall, it made for a very enjoyable evening and any one entertaining should have a great evening.
One word of caution though, there is some audience participation up on stage in the second act, so if you’re sitting on the floor, there is a chance you might get your big break on stage. So enjoy!
