Based on the 1998 film, “The Wedding Singer” which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the musical ‘The Wedding Singer’ definitely lives up to the hilarity of the film.
Set in 1985 when rock star wannabe Robbie Hart, played by the very talented Aidan Desalaiz, is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party, until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, played by Elicia MacKenzie, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.
The story unrolls bringing in other hilarious characters such as George (played by Andrew McGillivray) who is a flamboyant closeted gay man and Sammy (played by Ian Ronningen) who are Robbies best friends and do everything they can to keep his head in the music when his heart is broken from being left at the altar.
The lovely Dana Jean Phoenix plays the role of Holly….best friend to Julia and is the first one to realize that Robbie has feelings for Julia and spends her time trying to piece them together – all the while realizing that she is in love with Sammy.
Throughout the show, the talented cast breaks into song of love and heartbreak all the while keeping the comedy flowing. Even Robbie’s rapping Grandma (played by Marcia Tratt) did a hilarious rap – similar to the ever popular scene out of the movie.
In a true love conquers all, this production leaves you laughing and believing that anyone can find their true love. Even if you’ve seen the movie, the musical production as so many original musical numbers and added twists, it is a must see!
