Response to street lights letter

I would like to respond to Mr Lee’s article on the lack of street lights on East Chestermere Dr. I lived on this street for 20 yrs. and the issue came up on many occasions as to why we have no street lights or sidewalks. First, people didn’t want them, secondly, the cost to put in infrastructure is very high, Mr Lee should do a little homework on infrastructure costs, before making statements that “so it wouldn’t have cost much more to put in street lights”. People move out of the city for a variety of reasons, and I find [...]

Big mess if intersection is closed

I saw the signs on the Paradice road and Highway #1 regarding the plan for its closure. That is just bad idea. Now some people take Paradice and some people take Highway 1 exit(Proper Exit) and traffic is diversified. If they decide to close Paradice road all the traffic is diverted to main exit , which is going to be a big mess as 17th Ave is mess already with Stony Trail construction. More of us should go to the open house and oppose the idea of Closure of Paradice road. The open House is on November 29th at 6:00 [...]

Keep intersection for access, but improve safety

I am a Chestermere resident and would like to share my opinion on the Paradise Rd and Hwy 1 intersection proposed change. This intersection, the way it is provides great short cut access to Chestermemre. When going to Calgary using Hwy 1, it saves about 5 minutes and few Kilometers of commute. Many of my friends from all over Chestermere use this road and save lots time and fuel by doing so. This intersection also provides an alternative to other routes and another valuable access to Chestermemre. The concern on Safety is also valid and we need to do something [...]

(UN)Completion of East Chestermere Drive

It’s nice to see the curbs put in, and the widening of most parts of the road on East Chestermere Drive, but unfortunately, the street lights and bike paths were not completed. There are street lights at the end of East Chestermere Drive where the new houses are going up,before Camp Chestermere and on East Kinniburgh, and the roads were already excavated, so it wouldn’t have cost that much more to put street lights on. When pedestrians walk their dog, or bicyclists are riding at night, the danger is doubly increased with the lack of a bike path, and with [...]

Whitecappers Thank You

| Posted: 19 October 2011

The Chestermere Whitecappers Life Begins at 50 Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people who made our Expo on September 24 a huge success. It was a great honour to have the Chestermere Whitecappers Association’s first President, Jack Shaw and his wife, Goldie attend the Expo. There were also a number of past presidents and board members in attendance who continue to work very hard within the Whitecappers Association. Special thanks go out to the countless volunteers who over the past year took an idea and helped nurture it to fruition. The five members [...]

Remembering Jordan Keeler

| Posted: 19 October 2011

A happy boy with a gentle heart who always had a smile on his face. This is how Jordan Keeler is being remembered by friends, classmates, and staff at Our Lady of Wisdom School. Sadly, Jordan died in a fire that destroyed his family home on October 14. While we are saddened by his death, our school community chooses to honor his memory by celebrating his life. We have much to remember and celebrate. Jordan carried himself always with a sense of dignity. He is described by those who knew him best as a great and loyal friend. Never, ever, [...]

Disappointing dredging survey process

I am writing to express my disappointment with the Town of Chestermere’s lake dredging survey process. The lack of information provided made it impossible to make an informed decision. Specifically, the timeline and costs for dredging seemed excessive and enormous in range with no further explanations provided, funding by increasing taxes was the only method of financing identified, and the long-term outcomes to the community was completed omitted. Many residents identified their concerns with the lack of quantifiable information however the Town Council, to the best of my knowledge, did not publically respond, leaving residents to vote based on speculation. [...]

Not small town service

I write this as a warning about booking an event with the Chestermere Recreational Complex. I have lived in Chestermere my whole life,my grandfather was one of the original cabin owners on the lake in 1951 and played Chestermere Minor Hockey at the Chestermere Complex for sixteen years. Just recently I got engaged and we had decided to have our wedding reception at the hall in the complex, being as I have been to three of my friends receptions there and they were beautiful. We had called a year in advance to confirm the date and was told, ” the [...]

It’s good to be home

| Posted: 17 August 2011

Because we weren’t properly introduced the first time around, I thought it might be necessary to say hello and let everyone know who I am, and more importantly, that I’m back at the Anchor after taking a few months off. First I’d like to thank Bryan Weismiller for taking over the position of news reporter while I was away. It’s not always the easiest job, but he took it in stride and came out alive. Anyway, I’m Ashton. I’ve been with the Anchor since May, 2010. I have lived in Chestermere since 1996, so the community and I kind of [...]

Equivalent to driving without a seatbelt

Dear Sir, This afternoon (August 11 )I watched the news about the recovery efforts in finding the drowning victim, Richis Bondo Katumbay. I understand that the mayor of Chestemere may have been caught off guard maybe even ill prepared for the television interview. I found myself both dismayed and disappointed at the comments of the town’s mayor Patricia Matthews. “We do not have a dive team on the lake or an aquatic rescue. Our town has been fortunate to have a very safe lake and there hasn’t been an incident in over ten years so there hasn’t been a requirement [...]
